Article marketing has always been one of the best ways to not only bring in free traffic to a web site or blog, but also an excellent source for building backlinks. Of course the more backlinks you have, the better you rank in the search engines. The sites that you are writing articles for, already have very high PageRank and authority in the search engines, so when they link back to your site (through your article), you are getting some free link juice.

As much as we all hate content scrapers, they can also help us with our article marketing efforts. As the scrapers take content from big name article sites like EzineArticles and ArticlesBase, they are actually scraping your URL too, building you more backlinks.

Below is a list of some excellent article sites that can help you with building more traffic and backlinks to your web site or blog.

I’ve always wanted to run one of those big celebrity gossip blogs. They just get so much traffic and it would be fun to monetize the site. I just never ended up getting into and never had the passion to write about anything in that market. The only other choice I would have, is to outsource all of the content, but then it ends up being too much work to monitor the progress and all the copyright issues with images. If I’m not totally dedicated to something, I can’t dive in… but I have however spent a lot of time researching the niche, as well as seeing a great deal of celebrity wordpress themes. Here are some of my favorites.

One of the best ways to make money with your own blog, is to sell direct advertising. At the same time, one of the hardest parts about making money with blogging, is finding advertisers that want to advertise on your site. For the non advanced blogger, you may also run into issues on how to track your ads, rotate banners and process payment.

I’ve always sold my own banner advertising directly, but have recently moved a few of my network blogs advertising over to BuySellAds.com. The major reason for BuySellAds’s success is that they have one of the best (if not the best) market places for selling blog advertising. If you have the traffic and are in the right market, it’s likely you will sell a few spots on your blog within a reasonable amount of time. You also have to factor in pricing and rates within your niche.

I was reluctant to use BuySellAds on my network of blogs at first, simply because they take 25% commission on all sales. At the same time, BuySellAds handles everything, you just need to place a few tracking and placement pixels on your site to show where you want your ads to be. The bottom line is, BuySellAds has the advertiser base that I am looking for and continually sell out my ads.

With that said, I just added SixFigureAffiliateBlogging.com to the BuySellAds marketplace. During the process, I realized how important it is to fill in all optional information for your blog, as it will grab more attention from advertisers and legitimize your blog.

Here’s a quick run down on changes you can make to your BuySellAds marketplace listing to improve sales.

Generic Site Information:
The web site url, title, description and keywords are all kind of obvious. Fill these in as best as you can, while making them quick and to the point.

Hide Other Sites
This option will hide your current site from “Other Sites from this Publisher”. I would say not to select this option. If an advertiser is going to buy ads on one of your sites, it’s likely they would buy from your other sites as well. This would apply even more if they continually renew month after month.

Feedburner URL, Twitter Handle , Facebook Profile
All of these fields are optional, but it would label them as requirements. If you don’t have a Twitter or Facebook Fan Page for your site, make one! These are nothing more than new ways for people to find out about your blog, and virtually free traffic and promotion. At the very least, set these two paths up and create auto updates using your Feedburner feed.

By default, BuySellAds will create a screenshot of your blog for the sales page in their marketplace. Sometimes these images are blurry, distorted or appear with lightbox or popup windows. It’s important to look your best during an advertiser’s decision process. Take five minutes to open an image editor and upload your own high quality screenshot of your blog.

Favicon (Big and Small):
BuySellAds does not create a favicon for your listing. If you add a favicon, your marketplace listing will stand out that much more.

One of the most exciting parts about creating a new blog, is deciding what type of theme you are going to be using. Most times when I start a new site, I like to go with a premium theme from one of the sites below. After the blog has become established and is generating revenue, I will move onto a custom theme for my blog, like you see with the current SixFigureAffiliateBlogging.com design. I recommend and have purchased themes from all of the following sites.

1.) WooThemes

I would call WooThemes the power house of all premium wordpress theme sites. Not only do they have the best selection, but their quality is always top notch. Along with being a top notch resource, comes a higher cost to download themes and join their membership program.

2.) Elegant Themes

Quickly growing as one of the top premium wordpress themes sites, Elegant Themes has been adding some great new content as of lately, and now over have 40 themes. For anyone who has shied away from using WooThemes because of their higher price point, Elegant Themes offers full access to all of their themes for only $39 a year. Well worth it in my book!

3.) ThemeForest

One of the best ways to compete with these big players in the premium wordpress themes niche, is to let your customers also be your business. Theme Forest is more of a marketplace then a provider. Designers can upload their wordpress themes and sell them to anyone interested. There is a great selection of wordpress themes on this site, and it would be hard for you to not find what you are looking for.

4.) StudioPress

It wasn’t long ago when StudioPress only had a few themes, but what they lacked in quantity, they made up for it in quality. One of my best performing sites is actually still running off one of their first magazine style themes.

5.) TemplateSold

Just like Theme Forest, TemplateSold is another wordpress theme site run off other designers submitting their work and selling to bloggers everything. The formula works, and amazing new wordpress themes are coming out every day.

The original commenting setup when you install WordPress is good, but there are so many options out there now. Right now the choices are between Disqus, IntenseDebate and Facebook commenting. Below is a preview of the commenting form from each layout mentioned. Feel free to leave a comment and let me know which you are using, or have used in the past.

WordPress Commenting

Disqus Commenting

IntenseDebate

Facebook Commenting

Right now I’m leaning toward using IntenseDebate. I really like the one this one looks on blogs and how it threads comments nicely. Facebook commenting is another great option due to the fact that it can bring in more social traffic and interaction to your site. Which is your favorite?

It’s quite funny because I remember how big of a deal it was when I dished out the huge cost of $70 to buy my first domain name through Network Solutions. Imagine how many of us would be mega millionaires if domains were only $10 each a decade ago, like they are today. Ah… we can wish, but it’s only action that speaks words. However, it’s not too late… the domain name business is still huge! Let’s take a quick look at some of the top selling domain names in history!

That was a list I made back in 2007… now three years later and the domain market is still crazy. Just this year Dating.com sold for $1.75 million and Slots.com went for $5.5 million. Money.com released a video today on how domain name auctions are still taking place today and raking in big bucks. One buyer in the video walked away with NewYorkApartments.com for only $65,000, then stating he was ready to go up to $250,000 if needed. That’s a huge difference in pricing, which means there is still a huge demand in the domain marketplace, and it’s no longer for just one or two word domain names.

The internet is just get larger every day and there is only one dot com address out there… all the other extensions just don’t cut it. Sit back and watch as domain name prices continue to soar over the next few years… and imagine where they will be decades from now.

Before starting a new web site or blog, it’s important to sit back and look at who you are trying to target and what you want to accomplish with your blog. All too often, bloggers and site owners come up with a great idea for a site, but it’s concept becomes too large and isn’t focused in on a niche market, which makes it hard for you to focus on where you want to be. Not only does this make it hard for your to stay in one tight niche, but large sites that have been successful in this area usually have their own staff or are backed by a large company.

Let’s use video games for example. IGN.com is one of the largest and best sites around for video games and they also cover everything from computer games to PS3, Wii and Playstation. IGN is one of those companies I was referring to about having a large staff and heavily funded. Pushing out quality content and video isn’t an issue for them… now think about if you have a blog of your own and trying to replicate the process. It would be very difficult for you to provide any where near enough content for each area of the site, let alone try to compete for traffic.

So how can you compete, while staying in the same niche? Simple… break down your efforts and focus on a niche group. Instead of trying to create a blog with all video game systems, why not focus on one of the big three (Wii, PS3, XBox). To break down your efforts and increase your return on efforts, you can go a level deeper and select specific games which are only available on one of these system.

Using Google’s Adwords report, we can pull up a quick report on how many time the big three gaming systems are searched. Among the three systems, you have over 300 million searches every month. Even if you were to grab just one tenth of a percent (.001%) of this traffic, you would have 300,000 visitors to your blog… but the competition for these keywords is phenomenally high, as you can see from the “competition” bar.

Let’s break each of the gaming systems down another level, to a popular game from each system. You can see we still have millions of monthly searches, and they vary heavily based on the game search. Competition is still high, which usually means there is good money in this area… usually with direct advertisers, but also

One last time… let’s take one of the search results from above and break it down by itself. You are now given a select of top keywords searched just on this one search term. Now you have a massive amount of search results and topics all on this one tight niche group. Had you created a blog on call of duty when it first came out, you would have reaped the benefits every time a new version of the game came out.

This breakdown is a perfect example of how you can take one niche and continually break it down til you have a super tight and high traffic topic. Instead of spreading yourself and your blog thin, why not focus on a single topic with a large following and search traffic?

The following is an interview with one of my good friends DK (Dr. David Klein). I first met DK a couple years ago through ShoeMoney and was fortunate enough to attend his first ever ThinkTank conference event. Unlike any other networking event, it’s all about bringing together some of the most brilliant people online and just having a good time, no sessions or conference agenda… it’s an event like no other.

Outside of running ThinkTank, DK has been a chiropractic for years, but is now focusing his efforts to online marketing and teaching others how he is quickly rising to the top through his blogging and networking skills (pictured with Google’s Matt Cutts). DK will cover these areas and more in his interview below.

1.) Please tell us a little about yourself and how you first got into blogging.

I am an entrepreneur, a chiropractor, and a game changer. I have been the social director to the internet business world, as well as hired gun, and confidant to many of the biggest and baddest in the internet world. Currently I help companies with facebook advertising, reputation management, and unique “out of the box” marketing. With a few phone calls, I have helped some of the biggest companies, solve their biggest problems.

I am known as Dr. David Klein outside of the internet world, and first became well known amongst the internet geeks when Matt Cutts of Google put me out as a poster child for local marketing, and how to get links the white hat way, with my marketing of bodyabcs.com. I have helped some of the largest companies on the internet such as Facebook, Globalizer and Azoogle with their online marketing. I have also assisted internet marketing legend Jeremy Schoemaker with his Elite Retreat, and other projects. I puts on some of the most sought after events in the internet entrepreneurial world including the Purpose Inc. thinktank.

2.) Your original profession is a chiropractor, but how did you get into online marketing?

It originally started when I made a set of cartoon books that explained chiropractic better than it had ever been explained before. Understanding chiropractic is a life changing moment for most people. I took this book I had written “What You Need To Know”, and turned it into part of our website at bodyabcs.com, I then imagined google would immediately see how important this was, and list it at the top for chiropractic.

After some time seeing that not only was it now ranking well for chiropractic, but it was not even ranking well in google for “san diego chiropractic” I began a long road to discover what to do. I always go to the best experts I can find, so along the way ended up getting to be friends with guys like Matt Cutts, who has an enormous amount to do with what is and is not shown in google, Matt Mullenweg and Donncha Caoimh, the guys who co-created wordpress, and Jeremy Schoemaker, the guy behind the Shoemoney system.

3.) Besides financially, how has blogging helped your business and brand?

Bodyabcs.com developed tons of links as a result of Matt Cutts suggestion to put a blog there, and it made me more famous in the chiropractic world. In the internet entrepreneur world, the blog allowed me to write about the movers and shakers, and allowed me to get to be friends with them. It also just flat out makes you famous. It also gets you amazing customer service. When you have trouble with a product, you can simply say to the company, I have a blog read by up to 30,000 people per month. Can you just get this fixed? Things usually get handled properly then.

4.) Tell us about ThinkTank, how and why it was created and if it would have had the same success without your blog?

Thinktank fills a niche that is not filled otherwise. It and the blog feed off of each other, and neither would exist without the other. The internet rock stars, when they go to the conferences are inundated with people asking them for help. I wanted to give them a safe place where they can just be themselves, knowing what happened and what they said there would stay quiet. It allows us as a group to share ideas for three days and help each other with our projects. Oh, and what is it? It is three days of the best food, and open bar, top guys int he industry, hanging out in a park at the beach, surfing, sports, and laughing till it hurts.

5.) On your blog you have a ton of news sources that you or your blog have been featured in, how can other bloggers accomplish the same?

Do something notable. Some of them like when the New York Times, or the Wall Street Journal interviewed me, it was because I have expertise in facebook advertising. Others were simply because I did something notable like surfing a tsunami. (This is actually true, although it was tiny.)

6.) What advice do you have for anyone that wants to make a business out of blogging?

First off do it, and do it consistently. Most bloggers burn out after about 6 months of blogging. If someone asks me advice or wants help with their blog, I generally let them know to blog for 6 months first, before even talking to me about it. If you have a little money to spend, run some facebook ads targeted to the target market of your blog to generate the first readers. I am putting up a site in the next weeks called, blueandwhiteads.com about facebook advertising. If someone bugs me over there, I will put up a free video on how to do this.

7.) Any recommended blogs or resources for bloggers looking to bring their blog to the next level?

ZacJohnson.com of course. Then for a nice wide variety read, MattCutts.com, Shoemoney.com, QuickSprout.com, InspiredStartup.com.

8.) Do you have any big announcements or upcoming projects you’d like to tell us about?

Blueandwhiteads.com should be within a few months, the leading information source about facebook advertising.

For more on DK, be sure to check out his video series on how to excel your networking and make more money online.
